Beware of computers that come into the shop with the remnants of red EVIDENCE tape all over them.

Heh ... I bought an old Mac on eBay once that had a bright yellow sticker on it "This computer has been cleared of all classified material pursuant to DoD regulation (some number)," with two signatures... It amused me.

It's even more amusing when the classified info is still there.

Are the ones that come in where the case lock is broken and the stickers with the service tags are mysteriously missing... except for the big white bar-coded one on the back. It's even better when you turn it on and look in System and see the registration info:
"Parks & Rec
City of St. Paul"

...we seriously need to start charging more so people don't think of pulling this crap.

The guy that brought it in, conveniently enough, gave us a mobile phone number and an address that was for an apartment complex with no room number. When he came back in to check on it, and we told him it was stolen and we knew it was stolen (I had called the Parks & Rec department to confirm that it wasn't an auctioned system, and yep, one had mysteriously gone missing two days prior with matching asset tag.) He said he had purchased it at a pawn shop and had the receipt to prove it. Yeah-uh.
He never parked his car in front of the store, but you have to drive it past to get out (unless you enjoy driving into oncoming traffic). The most fun of that was as he drove away I got his license plate number. Saweeeeeet.

I wonder if charges were ever filed...
or if they got "lost in the computer" like another case I testified for with the St. Louis Park police a year ago.

By the way.

I forgot to mention, this was back when I still actually cared. Now I just do my job. Don't ask, don't tell, my policy of ultimate irony.
