Cross me and you get banned (x-posted)
Jul. 8th, 2004 11:18 pmI still participate at a particular free support site, but there are some people who are just plain jerks.
So what do I do with jerks? I get them banned.
Here's the backstory on this:
The guy posts this problem:
*** Win CE-popup killer ***
I went to Yahoo.com homepage and downloaded a toolbar with pop up killer but
when I restarted my system it doesn't show the bar on my yahoo page. What
can I do to correct this?
So I research the heck out of the problem. Alot of the toolbar popup blockers are not made for the WinCE platform. So I kept on digging until I found one, it was shareware - but I found one. I told him that the toolbar wasn't designed with WinCE in mind and suggested that he try the other one.
Here's what he replied to me on my solution:
You are wrong, I went to MSN and the problem has been corrected and it never
ceases to amaze me how eager you spin off websites like to generate money by
suggesting costly programs when many are free.
Your services will no longer be to my advantage.
Robert
This crossed the line. Everyone who works with me on that support site does it for free. We don't make a dime from anyone.
I passed it to my mentor and site admins and was given the thumbs up to send this guy a nastygram in return. I didn't cuss the guy out, but here's what I said in my reply to him:
Robert,
Your feelings towards our organization are unmerited and out of line.
We provide a service to all who come to our site and ask for help
without making a single dime from it. All our techs are volunteers who work at
the site during their free time, helping those who ask for it.
I took a great deal of time researching your problem with the data that you
provided. I provided you with the most viable option that was available. We
don't make any kind of profit off of referring you to products, regardless if
they're freeware, shareware, or otherwise. If MSN helped you, great - you
should have indicated as such in your ticket and closed it.
However, I don't appreciate your attitude towards myself or our site. I worked
very hard at trying to help you without getting anything in return. Your
response to me and to our organization was unnecessary and shows myself (along
with our site adminstrators) that you are an ungreatful person of lesser
intelligence. In other words, if your view of us is skewed in this manner,
then we don't need you to waste our time.
As of today, you have been banned from our site.
You will no longer receive any help from any of our techs and you will no
longer be allowed to access our site for any help.
Additionally, if you attempt to contact us any further, we will consider that
as harassment and contact your ISP of your behavior.

But what I wish I could have said was:
Screw you. Please suck my balls. Don't come back.
But I think the letter above was more appropriate. Don't ya think?

Date: 2004-07-09 06:57 am (UTC)Is this something that happens often on that site you're on? It seems the more free a service is the more demanding the users become ;-)

;-) Sorry that's just my opinion. If you can't go for a few hours without checking a posting board then you have problems.
I'll bet none of them paid for it either right?
Did I pay for LJ? No. Do I plan to? No. I enjoy the free service that's provided to me generously by the site's owners.
Do I get annoyed when LJ is down? Yes. Do I allow it to ruin my day? No. It's a fun thing to be on but it's not a way of life. :p
Ah well I'm off my soapbox on that one . . .
