So I spent most of my day cleaning virii off machines at work.. we got a massive infestation.

A lot of them were netsky.c ... but a few had sasser and korgo as well.

The best was one with netsky and korgo..... 10,510 infected files.
:P
With all that bloat, you'd think you were dealing with *insert favorite hated software here*.
heh

So, it got me thinking about home use... and friends who are using freeware scanners.... anyone ever used AVG? Have any experience, either good or bad?

I use it exclusively; haven't had any problems. I prefer it to Norton or McAfee.

AVG Works...

The free version is v6.0. That version is a little long in the tooth compared to the competition. Full system scans take a long time to complete, and you are limited to scheduling one daily scan, but yeah, it works.

If a file is infected, the ability to remove the virus and repair the file is nowhere as good as Symantec or McAfee. That's one category where the "big-boys" excel.

Oh yeah, and as for AVG: The GUI is just ugly as hell if that matters.

Yes, yes, and yes.
But it's free, it's fairly efective, and it's what we put on machines when the client won't/can't spring for McAfee (yuck) or Norton, oops, Symantec, or my favorite, TrendMicro.

I use it exclusively on my machines. Of course, I also run TrendMicro's Housecall about once a month, just to make sure.
I got a call one time about a customer who used Symantec, and he had viruses in his word files. I went down, plugged AVG in, and it cleaned them right up, with no problems. Personally, I don't care how ugly the GUI is, I don't sit there and watch it run while it is running. I'd also rather it run longer and scan every file, then skip a bunch and say it's done. I say go for it, it's free (which helps the accountants out) and it works very well.

What, all computers does not have any virus scanner installed?

Someone needs to be sacked and replace with a better person who knows what they are doing.

So disable and/or password protect it then.

Moah haha... Good 'ol Mac here. Could care less about a virus. Everything is backed up. I'll just kill it if worse comes to worse. On a positive note, I hear that AVG is very good. As well as eTrust.

i personally use AntiVir and set to scan on all file write operations. keep it up to date and i havent had to make one removal

had one slip in well no i let it in to see how the av would handle it. and it detected but couldnt clear anything in system volume information. my solution to kill the system restore as i never use it cleared it nicely but something to consider.

good av and i love it compared to anything else. very lean and trim and the system scan runs quickly.

www.free-av.com but the server seems to be having issues at the moment.

I use AVG exclusively at home and on my parents' machine but you can't use it legally in a work environment. Their license agreement says it's for personal home use only. That sucks.
