[livejournal.com profile] c0c0c0 posted here about snatching up a domain name that's expired just before and he prompted me to check into a domain I've been wanting for years (My first and last name. I've had my first name, middle initial, and last name for a few years now instead since this was already taken)

This is weird. According to http://www.internic.com/whois.html when I search domain this is still registered. If I search registrar or nameserver it appears however that it's not registered.

Obviously I want to snatch this domain up if I can. Is there any way to tell for sure if it's expired and how long it would be until I'm able to grab it?

I guess there are also services that will sit there and wait to snatch up a domain name if you put your name down. Anyone know which comapnies they are? I've checked a few but they don't seem to offer it anymore. Probably easier to ask those in the know. :-)

When a domain name expires, the registrar will hold onto the domain for an additional 30-45 days to allow the registrant to renew the domain easily. The domain is still expired, but only the registrant can renew it at this point.

After this period, the domain name goes into redemption, which is the process of turning the name over to verisign so it can be open to the public again. This period lasts another 30-45 days beyond the previous period, and you can get a domain name out of redemption [just the registrant can do this] but there is a lot of red tape, and the registrar is likely to charge you $100 or more for the service.

After this period, the domain name is available again to the general public. if you subscribe to a notification service they will email you/buy the domain for you the minute it hits the available market.

GoDaddy has a service that will register it for you as soon as it is available. You have to pay for it though.

IM me and I'll help you pin this down; I deal with this all the time. Your previous commenters were right about the domain timeline. The fact that you cannot register it right now indicates that it may well be in pending-delete status at this time, which means that timing is critical. You have to try to register it as soon as it comes through pending-delete.

I knew a guy who registered the name www.yodaporn.com once.

It's apparently no longer active.

It spawned from a .wav file that had been floating around, involving Yoda doing a "Samuel-L-Jackson-in-a-porno" imitation.

The thought of it still gives me bad images.
