This question goes to the webmasters out there. There is a domain I want that expired yesterday.

What is the ethical period of time I sould wait before snatching up the domain?

I want to buy it right now, but the good guy in me tells me to wait.

Buy it now, or some other person hanging out for it will.

Well that, my precious, depends on the domain extension.

.com? .net? .org? Get it NOW. Or some other bastard might ;)

.com.au on the other hand... different story

what she said
if you don't steal it now, some other ruthless sod will have.

I wouldn't worry about the previous owner going nuts, if they were going through any decent domain reseller, they would've been notified when their account was due to expire, thus there is no point waiting. get it nownownownownownownownownownownownownownownownownow

I don't think you have any ethical obligation to wait. Though I think that sometimes, even if the registration has expired, the registrar still won't let you get the domain for a while.

you're obviously already biased toward the little red demon on your shoulder. you want us to ease your conscious?

also afaik, 'expired' != 'available'

Can't Grab it Yet

Here is the way domain name expiration/renewal/new registration works:

After the domain name expires the customer has 15 days to renew the domain name. After this period the domain name goes onto Registrar-Hold. The customer has yet another 30 days of redemption period, after that it takes 5 days for the domain name to be permanently removed across all Name Servers. So you can't grab the domain name until about 80 days after expiration. I work for a Web Hosting Company and that is pretty much how the story goes. You may find some discrepancies with time periods, but it is basic ICANN procedure.

Most domain companies will allow you to put some money down on the domain name to try to get it once it expires, but that's no guarantee that you'll get it.

...and that pretty much sums up anything you purchase online. :p

this depends on the domain name extention.

I work for a domain name company. My advice is to buy it now. They have had PLENTY of time AND reminders to renew the domain. Chances are if they haven't done it by now...they are probably going to abandon it. People do this ALL the time. They buy hundreds (yes hundreds) of domains and a year or two later just let them drop off. It's strange...but carpe domain!

Yup people do that quite a bit. At one point I had the idea to register my four initials as a domain name (first name, middle name, confirmation name, and last name) so I went to register it. damn already taken (it's not a typical combination).

So I go to the website. These people are trying to sell off this and hundreds of four letter combination domain names. oooookay So I figure I may as well e-mail them and ask what they want to purchase this domain.

They were asking about $800 to release the domain name to me.

at the time (probably about 4-5 years ago) I could register a domain name for under $100. I told them where they could shove that. ;-)

Next year the domain had expired. I didn't bother registering it.

On another note take a look at what they're asking for http://www.vtec.com I don't see them ever getting a price in the low six figures for that.
