What is it with people?

Suppose I went to a store 5 years ago and bought a round table cloth for a round table. Everything was fine and good for 5 years and then last week my kid was jumping on it and broke it. So after beating the crap out of him for jumping on my table and breaking it, I go out and buy a new table. They don't make a round table anymore, so I buy a square one. The table cloth doesn't fit.
So do I take the table cloth back to the store? No. I put it in the closet, give it away on freecycle, throw it in the goodwill box, etc. The store would never accept the return of a 5 year old tablecloth.
So why is it that users think they can use software for 5 years, and when they upgrade their computer, they should get a refund or a free upgrade simply because the software won't work on Vista? I should point out that a version that DOES work with vista is available for a nominal upgrade fee ($10).
Am I the only one who thinks this is crazy?
Granted, this guy is a financial planner, so he's probably freaking out about $10 because he's screwed in this economy. Oh, and he's an AOL user, which explains a lot as well..
