Ladies and Gentlemen.
It finally happened.
Today a user emailed with the following subject line

I made a mistake

Maybe this will start a trend of users telling us the truth!

One of our clients called in this morning complaining that she had no spam. She was deeply worried.
I told her to watch her junk box for the entire day and call me back if it stayed empty. Hopefully that will keep her busy long enough for me to get out of here. (Yes, I did confirm emails were flowing.)

To lighten the new year, I present you this link to The Editing Room's take on Live Free or Die Hard. In particular, Kevin Smith.

The relevant scene, although the rest is also entertaining. )

Thank you for your help. I will give it a try. Is there any chance of SS identifying the hijacker’s IP address? My local IP has a new provider that can block IP addresses from any continent.

The hijacker may be from China, Nigeria, or Johnstown, PA. I use to work for the company in Johnstown. It has a black ops computer center. They could just be nosy. The hijacker may be from VeriSign (attempting to sign me up for Click Fraud); Norton (charged my credit card for software that I did not purchase); or it may simply be the FBI (waiting for me to look at tits).

This guy has a tin foil crown.

So today my boss asks me to take a little time and figure out the best way to clean up our AD enviroment. I tell him no problem and take the task back to my desk with me to ponder over. About 3pm I decide, hey these people don't really know who and where these machines are, so I decide to send this email out..

As of 7 January I will be removing the following machines from the Active Directory enviroment. If you are responsible for one of the machines, please see me at your earilest convience. The machines listed below do not respond to pings, and do not have a DHCP assigned IP Address.

machine 1
machine 2
machine 3
machine 4
you get the picture.

So "Senior Engineer" guy gets up and walks around asking people if they have anything on these machines.. Then he tells me that I can't delete them just becuase they don't answer pings.

So I calmly smile at him and then tell him if he has any questions, to go see my boss. He tromps out and here I sit writing the script to delete those machines. :)

Programs that enforce "trial versions" by using a kernel-mode driver to write registry keys in places they have no business touching can eat me.

As far as I'm concerned, that kind of behavior isn't much better than a rootkit. If you want to enforce your shitty time bomb that badly, set up an activation server, give out trial keys, and be straightforward about it. Don't fuck with my computer.
