Here's an email that went straight into my "Darwin" file:

Hello, I forget what it was I attempted to download from you, but I do remember that it was not compatible with my OS of choice WIN98.

All files deleted.

I do think that as WIN98 is the last Microsoft OS that gave access to true DOS, and that it is the least controlling, and still used by millions, that you and simliar companies are making a mistake not writing for it. But that's just my, and those millions, of course, opinion.

Oh, of course! Win98 is the future...if the future was 8 years ago.

I just got a call from a student's mother that really made me want to hit my head on the desk. Evidently, the student thought she didn't have Word anymore, and so, for some reason unknowable to the computer-savvy mind, decided to reinstall her OS. Her mother called because disc two was giving her an error (probably a scratch). As soon as I described the user to my coworkers, they both groaned and said "oh, no, it's HerName!". Yesterday, one of my coworkers created a new user on her computer to fix something, and so now Word isn't in her dock.

Yes, indeedy, this user reinstalled her operating system because Word was no longer in her dock. And then, her mother asks me, "She has these two other CDs sitting on her desk...should I try the one that says 'Microsoft Office' on the front?"

I forsee another call from this user when she realises that she still doesn't "have Word"...and has also lost all her data.

EDIT: Yep, just got another call from the mother, who was unable to eject the disc on her own. After beating my head on the desk, I told her to bring the laptop in...because trying to describe where the "eject" key is over the phone is just not efficient.

This one's a bit of a rant. And since I'm preaching to the choir at work, I might as well preach it here...

rant ahoy! )
