I work tech support for a college. Excited new freshmen want their email accounts and they want them now.

While I only work at the front desk (and therefore only read the tickets and answer phones) a few hours each week, I've responded to four such queries since last Thursday.

But this one really takes the cake:
Is it possible for incoming freshmen like myself to
set up an e-mail account at this time? I've downloaded
thunderbird, but I'm having difficulty figuring out
how to register a username and password. I've visited
the "password retrieval" site, but after entering my
last name, birth date, and school ID correctly,
had no luck. Am I able to get this going now, or do I
wait until the fall?

Wait...what? You downloaded Thunderbird and expect to register for your new email account through a third party client, albeit one we recommend? I'm betting that he didn't even download our own version (which has the server settings already set up).

Even better, their mailings already cover this. If they, you know, were able to READ, maybe they'd know the answer already.

These kids are basically the replacements for my class. They are not worthy!

So a few days ago, I received a call at the help desk from a mother.

Now, I work at the same college as [livejournal.com profile] knittinggoddess, which is full of fairly intelligent people. We get a few really dumb questions, but they mostly come from professors who aren't really familiar with the computing world. We also, over the summer, receive a few calls from parents who want their kid's email set up (which doesn't happen until they get to school in the fall).

Funnily enough, however, this was not the mother of a freshman. This was the mother of a junior in college. The call went something like this: )

So. Much. Time. is wasted by idiocy.

Dear Dev Team,

Please make the following error message, and all those like it, less I-really-need-a-date, and more informative:

Thx,

The ones who have to explain this crap.
