Here's a snippet of conversation with a faculty member. First some background. About 5 or 6 years ago, the college bought all the full-time faculty members laptops. OK, that's all you need to know.

Me: Helpdesk, this is, [livejournal.com profile] doctoreon
Her: I need some help remembering my password to my laptop, I haven't used it since I first got it at the training session.
Me: "You haven't used your laptop since the initial training session?"
Her: "It was really too heavy for my tastes to be carrying around."
Me: "..." (wtf? It's a laptop - a free goddamn laptop, lady!!)
Her: "...and my desk space here at home really wasn't deep enough to use it here..."
Me: "..." (*boggles* Again, it's a laptop...how deep of a desk do you need?)
Her: "...but I just cleaned up a little so I thought I'd get it out."

I really have no words. A couple thousand dollars of tax payer money wasted on her because "it was really too heavy for her tastes." I'm so sorry to put you out. So sorry to strain you. I didn't know that the incredible gift of free computing would be such a burden to you.

Ok, I guess I had a couple words.

Taken directly from my case notes, italics are my comments:

User has laptop powered up.
Asked user how she connected to network; dialup, cable or DSL.
User states she has DSL.
Walked user through changing connection settings to "already connected to internet".
(This took about seven minutes...she kept clicking ahead and not listening.)
Had user connect to network; "destination unreachable" error.
User now states her DSL is down...and has been for some time.
(/wishes for '10,000-volts-to-user's-face' button on keyboard...)
Walked user through changing settings back to dial-up.
Had user connect via dial-up; "no dial tone" error.
Verified user only has one phone line.
Verified user is speaking to me on said phone line.
(I am now wishing I had never gotten out of bed this morning.)
Advised user to hang up, connect to network and call back on cell.

...I failed to mention that we're still in call-back mode and she'll be waiting for an hour or so. Bad analyst! No cookie!
