dev: Hi. We used to use "nohup" on Linux, but on the advice of (team), we switched to "setsid". Now we're trying to set up the same job on Solaris, and there's no "setsid" command. What is the Solaris equivalent?

me: ... nohup.

dev: Can we get "setsid" installed?

me: no.

Good call. If you DID install it, they'd want it installed in EVERY machine. Everywhere.

BECAUSE LINUX AND SOLARIS ARE EXACTLY THE SAME OS AND WHY SHOULD WE HAVE TO WRITE ADDITIONAL CODE TO ACCOMMODATE THAT?

The command to do that equivalent in Solaris, and it's common in Linux too so you might as well use it instead is "pkill".

The issues are as follows:

1) That on the advice of a random development team, they stopped using the supported cross-platform tool for this task and changed to something else that works on only one of our platforms.

2) That on finding the second platform without that tool, it didn't even occur to them to look for the first tool, although they clearly demonstrated remembrance of its existence.

3) That on discovering they'd made an unwise change, they asked that a Linux-only tool be installed on Solaris, instead of realizing their mistakes and moving back to the cross-platform tool.

I just learned about nohup recently as I've gotten into the world of maintaining an IRC bot. It's one hell of an awesome utility, that's for damn sure.
