[identity profile] ghostdandp.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery
So even though I have a decent job I actually like I keep an eye out for new jobs being posted to see if anything looks really cool. Today I stumbled upon this one:

"Dependable transportation" is always inspiring to see as a qualification. It's good to know they're not confident that they can pay you enough to buy a reliable car.

As someone in one of those jobs, I rather like that all of our postings include those requirements. We do client on-sites regularly, and I feel good knowing that:

* my cow-orkers aren't going to call me up 5 minutes before a scheduled visit saying their car broke down. They keep their vehicles maintained enough to be able to do their jobs. (Not sure how rare it is, but we're definitely paid more than enough to do that maintenance, with mileage reimbursement on top of that)

* my cow-orkers aren't going to show up to a client's place of business in a ratty t-shirt and jeans and say "yo dude" to the company president. They dress and act appropriate for the work environment. Clients appreciate the professionalism, and unlike stereotypical "consultants", they don't get nasty surprises 6 months later when it turns out everything was just smoke and mirrors.

Of course, the people I work with aren't the types that need to be told these things, but putting the requirements in means less resumes from people who need to be working somewhere else. I'm not trying to say that showing up to work in pajamas is a bad thing - it works in a lot of places - just that I *like* working in a place with those "professionalism" sort of requirements, and I kinda resent the implication that it's automatically a crap job.

TL;DR: I'm a weirdo who actually enjoys working within those sorts of requirements.

Addendum:

The posted job is clearly total crap. :) Not all "professional" jobs are though.

Watch out for that Windows Server 2005. I hear it's a doozy.

(Maybe they meant Virtual.)

Good thing that proofreading and fact checking were not part of the job requirements of the person who wrote that. :/

I remember 3 years experience in C# being required by an employer in 2004. Much the same as 9 years now...

A company specialising in Node.js posted a job listing asking for three years experience with it. The project turned one this month.

Many people lolled on the outside at that one.

they lost me at "securing windows boxes".

Securing Windows is actually pretty easy. Kill off a few services, place them behind a good (pfSense) firewall, put glue in all usb ports and cd/dvd drives, and remove mouse and keyboard.

Oh fucking please. If you actually know something about Windows, it's not that hard. It's not all Windows 3.11 these days.

Because solutions like SELinux are so wonderful to use to (among other things) fix the 1978 permissioning model on *nix boxes.

In 1997, I jokingly answered an ad that wanted at least 10 years of Java coding experience. Java was released by Sun in 1995. I included the use of my time machine in the cover letter.

Maybe they're expecting someone to call in and correct them. Maybe it's a secret test of character. Maybe I'm overly optimistic.
