For those of you who haven't used System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008, there are apparently a few caveats to its use. Like managing virtual hard drives. In the Hyper-V manager, removing a VHD unlinks it from the virtual machine but leaves the file on the server. In SCVMM, the button is labeled the same - remove - and has the same icon. However, as it turns out, the function is not the same.

Allow me to quote from Microsoft support:

"In SCVMM, unfortunately it does delete the VHD.

There is a patch coming out for SCVMM R2 to change the text on the dialog box to make it more explicit that that action deletes the VHD."

MICROSOFT, YOU MOTHERFUCKERS!

Also:

"I do not know of a way of recovering a deleted VHD. Situations like this are exactly why the text is being changed. Do you have a backup you can restore from?

I will double check for any reference of a way to recover, but I don’t believe one exists."

THAT WAS MY BACKUP!

that's why I always said - do _not_ use hyper-v. There are better alternatives, both cheaper and better working.

RHEV is out and about, by the way: http://isthereachoice.com

I'd use VMware but some of mission critical apps are not supported under VMware.

What isn't supported by ESX, but is supported by Hyper-V? Seriously, how bizarre.

Wow, a whole class of MS products I have never heard of before. And I've been a Windows administrator for 12 years. Given the evident level of market saturation, no wonder they don't care about supporting additional virtualisation platforms.

Thanks, I will definitely keep this in mind. We have a campus agreement for things M$, so we have a few copies of Hyper-V around. Installing CentOS VMs on it is odd though - there's the need for a legacy network adapter, for one thing, which is annoying. But having said that, we get to use ESM's freeware for the next VM host.

Still, that seriously sucks. Part of me wants to say 'Sorry for your loss'!

Outstanding- I'm very glad we are not using at my place. 9We are a VMware shop for virtual machines, even though we have a M$ enterprise license.
