Now this takes dedication...

If you haven't seen a CRT broken before, that front glass can be Thick.

I think I can see the problem...

Yep. Looks like someone tried pulling the power out by yanking on the cord instead of the plug. No matter how many times you try to tell people...

Dayum.

But haven't we all had days where we've wanted to do just this?

I question whether any of us have had days we haven't wanted to do just this.

It looks like a portal into another dimension. I have this irresistible urge to stick my arm in there and see what happens...

"There's no picture and it just makes this buzzing noise .."

I knew of someone who made the mistake of trying to take the video driver board off a CRT that had been vented, while the thing was still on. It arced over through the video board, and him, quite nicely. I hear he survived. :\

Hot damn! Someone was really trying - I would have thought the keyboard would give first.

I recognize that model. While the glass IS thick, that keyboard isn't just plastic, it's got a SERIOUS metal frame.

(It's a Digital dumb terminal, similar model to an IBM dumb terminal...)

... I think the pic was staged, but still...

Agreed. For one, there's nowhere near enough glass scattered about the area to account for that size of hole.

Not to mention the grey foam behind the glass holding the keyboard in place.

Someone should make a plastic model of this that you could sucktion-stick to a screen as a joke to make it LOOK like someone did this to your computer!

Tineye (http://tineye.com/) gave me this higher resolution picture: http://www.it-server-support-london.com/resources/12919/assets/images/it-engineer.jpg

Seems to be a Finnish keyboard and monitor.

Yeah, that looks like Finnish on the label stuck to the keyboard ..

Possibly staged, but even if it were, still shared around IS&T. They appreciate the laughs. :)

The front glass is Thick because if the tube implodes, you want the side *away* from you to be doing the imploding, at least until it lets the vacuum out. ;)

(Plus I think the glass has some lead in it in case the secondary anode voltage gets too high and the tube starts emitting X rays. It's *supposed* to shut down the HV before that point, and will if someone hasn't futzed around with the flyback and X-ray circuitry, but the glass will stop at least a little of it, I think.)

Then there was the call where I had to explain to a freaked out lady why she didn't have to worry about her LCD emitting radiation .. ::facepalm::
