1997: I yahoo'd the term 'werewolf'

Though I still always chuckle when our 5th grade history teacher that year told the whole class to go to "www.whitehouse.com". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitehouse.com

I can't believe that I remember this, but the first search I did all on my very own was also in 1997, it was "cheese". The first search that I was present for was something about boarding schools in Germany.

I don't remember the first search I did. I do remember the first search I did for a chemistry project on nitroglycerin. 8 out of the first 10 search results were recipes on how to make it. And 5 of those were the same one verbatim.

I think my favorite step was "If the temperature rises above 20 deg C RUN!!!"

I can't remember, might have been Backstreet Boys or something.

I do remember when a teacher tried to go to google and managed to end up at a porn site; but that was in high school.

I went to a PC lab at RMIT and looked up Polyester Records. They were supposedly the first online shop prescence in aus - at that time of course it were still all mail order, but I was impressed anyway.

My first "search" was on a "search engine" I was using... My word was "Gopher" followed by the word "help" which was what it said to do across the top of the screen. It was the early 90's maybe even December 91, if I'm not mistaken(could have been 92, but doesn't grok well with other events).

Before that was my first successful "grep" for the word "horse," inside of the text files I was searching for the solution to a text based Feature Control on a Goldbox game that someone was teaching me how to use without owning the manual. We used telnet to get into his storage shell at a university, and grepped through the files shared there so everyone could play the game.

I... don't remember my very first. I know that Altavista was my favourite search engine once I figured out what search engines were. This was around '96 or '97.

The first thing I remember deliberately searching for, although it may not have been the absolute first, was Star Trek fanfic. :P

Hah I remember in 1998, when I was in eighth grade, being told not to go to whitehouse.com. And of course, everyone did anyway!

When I was like 12 (1996?) I remember searching online for Star Trek pictures.

Man I used to write soooo much Voyager fanfic back in the day, I was part of such an amazing community from the stvsd.com (star trek voyager starfleet database).

I heard at some point back then the most websites on the internet were pornographic based, but the next highest were like star trek fan sites!

And the overlap between porn and Star Trek is huge. XD

I don't remember the first term I used on the web, but back then, Yahoo was at xcf.berkeley.edu and dialup still billed by the hour. A couple years prior to that, there was this great thing called "Gopher".

I stand corrected. I'm getting my edus mixed up.

As I recall, in its very early infancy, Yahoo was initially buried a few paths deeper than that under someone's user account.

My first computer was an upgraded 386, given as a gift after the birth of the second spawn, so sometime in'93.

*shakes my cane at the young whippersnappers then watches in grim resignation as the dryrotted elastic band disentigrates and the whole thing falls apart* dammit. (true about the cane, foldable canes do that. And mine did.)

Gods, I'm old. I remember using archie back in the day, but the first true 'search engine' usage was probably on lycos, looking for a background image to put on the sparc station at school. (this would have been in '94 for all you youngsters out there.)

First search I ever did on my own was 1997, looking for Buffy pictures. It was just prior to my 10th birthday.

::brain breaks::

It was probably "dragons" or Star Trek related, but I couldn't tell you the search engine. I used the internet for email - my first account being at AOL - and I probably used their internal search for stuff.

I remember being THRILLED about Yahoo's yellow pages search engine, and I haven't owned a phone book since.

I can't remember what I used before google.

I remember finding Barney-hate fanfiction, though.

Heh. Mine was in early 95, maybe late 94, and it was 'anne mccaffrey' (my favorite author at the time). Shortly after that, I discovered text-based RPGs (in the form of MOOs and MUSHes), and started playing them. :)

I don't remember my first search term, but I do remember my first search engines: Archie and Veronica. I was amazed when I discovered Archie had an email interface so I didn't have to tie up the phone line for 45 minutes while it performed the search.

I feel old now.

I couldn't tell you my first one. I was more of a "lets try random url's and see what we get". I remember looking up a genetic disorder for biology once though. It was called Super Female because you would have 3 X chromosomes instead of 2. In hindsight, looking up "Super Female XXX" was probably a bad idea.
