Gods.

We are absolute, mortal gods.

Why?

God is an all powerful being whom is able to control every factor of our lives.

We are technology professionals. Professionals in a skill that is becoming a pivotal necessity in today's world. Our world is increasingly relying on information and the technology that handles it. Therefore, those who handle that which handles the information, wind up handling the information themselves.

We control that which is important. We control the information. We control your life in the technical world.

Maybe not everything is going well in the technical world, maybe everything is going great. Sooner or later though, you'll have to pray to us by picking up a phone or sending us an e-mail, asking us for a favor. Just like God, we may, or may not, decide to answer your prayer. If we do answer your prayer, it may not be the answer you wanted.

But either way, sometimes you're just going to have to shut up and accept it

I usually think of myself as helping the customer (the user). If they can't do their job, we don't get paid. But then again, I work in a financial institution.

I'm here to not only take the call, support the call, resolve the issue or delegate to someone that can.
I am lucky to work on a team that supports each other and we invest in users' success. If they aren't successful (ie. by not being able to use their technology we've placed for them) then neither are we.

My boss says I'm not allowed to be a god, at least not in situations where it shows the failures of those working at the helpdesk (I don't).
