Sep. 11th, 2009 02:41 pmNot strictly on topic, and I'm sure some of you don't care or may wish to mock me, BUT, I just took my first Microsoft-certified exam (70-270) and I freaking passed it! WHOOO HOO FOR ME. Next time I get shit from a User Who Thinks They Know Better Than Me, I'm gonna wave my MCP certificate in their faces, lol.

Date: 2009-09-11 01:56 pm (UTC)To play Devil's advocate though: the XP client is the easiest one of the bunch. :D
Me? I'm pondering taking the rest of the core needed to bump my MCSA to a proper MSCE. I forsee a lot of solitare and Minesweeper going down that road, though...

Date: 2009-09-11 07:16 pm (UTC)I guess that's why it's called Minesweeper Consultant and Solitaire Expert....
Re: MCSE
Date: 2009-09-12 04:41 am (UTC)In all honesty- the current iteration of the MSCA suite is actually pretty damn tough. Apparently, Micro$oft learned their lesson and cranked up the difficulty levels for the post Server 2000 versions of the certifications.

Date: 2009-09-11 02:17 pm (UTC)I got me an MCP too. NT server 4.0 implementation.
Got an 800 page book to read, read 2 pages about the raid and passed with 98%.
hmm.
Just wish Microsoft would realize that Ö is not spelled with a DOT.
7-bit mofos!
And the Novell certs are given on much nicerlooking paper.
oh well. 8)

Date: 2009-09-11 04:36 pm (UTC)I'm fitting that test into my schedule next month. My boss wants me to actually have a cert saying MCSE. So hey ho, off to the center we go.
If anything, they are good for resume padding.
(I once walked a "I'm a certified MCSE" guy through resetting a router and connecting to a wireless network.)

Date: 2009-09-12 01:31 am (UTC)I can top it. A couple of jobs ago I was working in IT and one of the factory-monkeys took a bootcamp, got his MCSE, and became "Instant Computer Genius". He used to drive me crazy with rookie questions every time I walked through the shop. The time I completely gave up was when he was complaining about yet another computer at home that wasn't working. By the symptoms it sounded like a corrupt drive so I told him to boot off a floppy and run a scandisk. "How do you boot from a floppy?". The punchline is when I left the company he applied for my job. The CIO was seriously considering him, "well, he does have an MCSE".

Date: 2009-09-11 05:07 pm (UTC)There are a couple of students in my class who have regularly been getting 1000s on their MS cert exams. It's like -- guys, seriously, at least pretend you're doing it the honourable way.

Date: 2009-09-12 04:44 am (UTC)I'll cheerfully admit- the braindumps and 'cheat' sheets are at least useful to give you an indication as to the style of the questions.
But crap like subnetting? and the more practical planning aspects? That takes actual thinking...

Date: 2009-09-11 05:51 pm (UTC)The other one I recall was some guy who was cisco certified and he was getting snippy with me when I told him I could reach my router and it was his subnetting which was broken, and that he was a CCIE so he could take it from there.

Date: 2009-09-11 11:52 pm (UTC)But please, don't be that person who waves the MCP around. The people who do that are part of why everyone devalues the microsoft certs. We've all heard of people ranting and raving about how they're microsoft certified so they shouldn't have to properly troubleshoot with a tech, or they plain don't understand their systems. I'm not saying that you're one of those people, but anyone who waves the MCP around looks like those people, unfortunately :(

Date: 2009-09-11 07:49 pm (UTC)I actually scored higher on the 290 (Server '03) than I did on the 270. Even then, there were always the uber geeks in the class who looked down on those who didn't get a perfect score. (Yeah, but I got people skills, bitches!)
