Uh... What?
You know what the worst part about answering customer emails is?
Discovering just how poor the literacy level of the majority of the human race has become.
More TV.
More beer.

Date: 2004-04-17 04:09 am (UTC)Truth be told, I believe the customer is asian, and we do get quite a few in Sydney that aren't strong with their english.
But sometimes we get emails of this calibre that are from fluent, english speaking, australians.
Hahah, oh tbe beer and TV remark was my take on just what people will do these days. Rather than increase their literacy, or even use their brains just a smidgeon, they'd rather sit and drink beer and watch TV.
Not to say I don't love my beer though. Heh.

Date: 2004-04-17 04:20 am (UTC)Actually, I think my TL might have it, I'll ask when he gets back from dinner.
Yeah I can see what you mean, it would be a little difficult in those areas.
Australia is extremely multicultural, so you of course have a tolerance for those who have difficulty with the language. It's just how you grow up.
But I have no tolerance for someone who has grown up speaking english, and being taught in english schools, and just has no basic concept grasp on the language.
It drives me insane.
Hell, even one of my fellow technical supervisors here is fucking atrocious.
This email he sent to my TL and I the other day. It was regarding one of our reps.
The rep's name is Suthan.
"Hi Guys,
Satan was helping his dad outside in the garden and he hit his Thumb Nail with a hammer and the nail has come off his hand, and his thumb is all split open.
He is outside the hospital now and is going to get it budged and stiched up and will be late.
Will be in about Pam but can't be sure, but will make up the time he needs.
If any problems call him on his mobile."
I went into hysterics when I read this.

Date: 2004-04-17 04:24 am (UTC)And as for the english speakers going to english schools etc. that can't read or write I totally agree with you. Anyone, IMHO, who grows up in a country with whatever language should speak that language regardless of or in addition to whatever they speak at home, if their parents happened to have a different country of origin. *sigh*
If you can find that email, could you please send it to me at darkmage_the_fixer@yahoo.com? I'd love to read it.

Date: 2004-04-17 04:35 am (UTC)I had one that had misspelt "voucher" as "vaucher".
"Advice" as "advise".
Etc etc.
Oh see I'm not too fussed about people not being able to speak the language too well because of ethnic backgrounds etc.
Though I do agree that if you go to english speaking schools within Australia, then yeah, you should most definitely be able to both speak, and use written form of the language.
I'm just more concerned about the level of schooling that is being given to children these days, and also at people's total ignorance of their misuse of the language. I understand that people have different intelligence levels, but you think they'd do their best to try and better themselves.
And we've found the email, but I only have a hard copy.
It's so brilliant, I should type it up.

Date: 2004-04-17 05:14 am (UTC)Though it makes things difficult when some wont even speak the language at all. I used to work in a computer store, and Japanese women would come in sometimes to buy stuff, and they wouldn't even speak to you. They'd ignore you if you'd even try to speak to them. Made life a little difficult.
Yeah sure, go ahead, I'll add you back. =)

Date: 2004-04-17 07:08 am (UTC)Yeah I can imagine how that would make customer service a little difficult. It's like trying to get a cab in NYC, it's not hard, but if you get a driver that a)speaks English and b)knows their way around it's wise to get on your knees and thank whatever god you worship. Trust me...get someone who's just off the boat and speaks nothing but Farsi and it's a miracle if you even wind up in the same borough as you wanted.

Date: 2004-04-17 04:27 am (UTC)still our policy states that we will reply to all of these email messages. there is a reason we have phone support as well as chat support. one would think that logically if you can't get your email you would not send an email - how do they expect us to answer them?
one hour left... :)
then it is off to see the pixies.
it's worth it :D
