Dear $Bosslady:

Can we please have special 4x as expensive labor rates for people who either "tried to fix it themselves" or "had their friend the computer genius try to fix it for them"?

That is an age old practice I highly endorse. I recall many years ago seeing a sign at a plumber's that read: "Plumbing Services, $50 per hour. $100 per hour is you help me. $200 per hour if your kid helps me." Works for me. :)

Classic win.

I saw the sign in a bike shop ...

Repairs:

$25/hr
$50/hr if you watch
$75/hr if you help
$100/hr if you worked on it before bringing it in.

I was always taught to try and do for myself before asking for help, and.... you're probably right for snarking about it. More than once I've made matters worse. ^_^

Judging by the context I'm guessing it wasn't a "take the whole thing apart" kind of problem. ^_^

We got one of our corporate machines back disassembled because it "wouldn't boot and we had to get some data off the hard drive so here's the hard drive for you ain't I smart?"

We reassembled the machine, started it, selected Last Known Good, pulled the user's local My Documents folder and dropped it on his new desktop.

Oh that we could have charged that manager 4 times our normal rate.

You don't? I sure as hell do. Well actually it's my "published" rate which is still nearly twice my "leave me alone with the machine and let me get it fixed for you" rate.

100% seconding this. I really want a 'dipshit surcharge'.

This.

4x rate for dipshittery, though I'd be willing to drop it down to 3.5x for customers only going as far as "I once had a friend in computers and I think that X is the problem"
