Well... going into the nice holiday weekend I start having internet problems. Slowness, etc. Reloading the router helps, but only for a few minutes. Checking the console, I see %SYS-3-CPUHOG messages. Out of the blue, something has gone tits up with the DNS services on my c2600.

no problem - I can copy the config onto a spare unit and worry about re-flashing the corrupt image on this one later.

Problem - 15 minutes after getting the spare up and loaded it is giving the same error. Two routers and two different versions of 12.4 IOS and same error. Hmm... "might not be hardware or corrupted IOS".

Upgrade the original to a 12.4-23 version of IOS. It seems to work... then I find a CPUHOg message on the console. Crap. Not as many, and not as fast, and the internet hasn't fallen over yet, but... If this has shown up on two routers with three different versions/revs of 12.4 IOS, then it's going to be affecting more than just me. I wonder how long till it shows up on Google and what search terms will be needed to find it?

I sure hope it's not a Comcast change/problem. Crap.

I have to have reliable internet or I can't work from home tomorrow. Fuck me gently with a motorized defoliating appliance.

Hehe... That fire knocked out quite a few things: Authorize.Net, KOMO TV, Microsoft Bing Travel...

Btw.. Who thought it was a good idea to install a sprinkler system in a data center?

The building I work in at one point thought this to be perfectly fine. *sigh* They tried to give us a normal sprinkler a few times when we expanded our office space and required another small network closet. My boss was clearly annoyed and he's about the most level headed and calm guy I know. I can't say I've ever seen him outright angry even in the worst of situations.

Probably the city, who forced it on them before they could get their residency permit. City inspectors are so bloody corrupt, they get kickbacks from every direction.

where FP failed, is that their switch gear did not sense and switch appropriately when they encountered a phase sag. When this occurs your other two phases heat up until failure (either breaker opening or meltdown) in this case the bus system was weaker then the breakers. two pieces of aluminum super heating under, what was probably a 200f sprinkler head= epic fail. not so much that they had a sprinkler in the switch room. Sprinklers are the preferred methodology of DC design... its only what I do for a living so take it with a grain of salt

well, there *was* a story a while back about some lady getting TORE UP because Mr Fixit she was seeing decided to make a homemade fuck toy using a sawz-all and a dildo.

he didnt remove the sawblade. just stuck the dildo on top of it. you can imagine the hilarity that ensued.

ah, found the link http://www.wusa9.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=82520

The ideal solution would have been to go have a pair of titanium chastity bike shorts made and melt the key down. Sadly, I had neither the time nor money to do so. D:

My husband once told me a story of a call he went on where a guy got a knitting needle lodged pretty much all the way up his urethra. He's never been able to tell me who though as the entire department was visited by the government and sworn to secrecy. *sigh*

(I include this for two reasons: Your story brought it to mind, and I feel if we're going to make all the women hop around wincing, the men deserve no better.)

;)

Also: Ow, just...ow. I hope for her sake she was okay. Even if she was lethally stupid.

I don't know about you, but if something like DNS is chewing up CPU on an edge device, I'm thinking it's either an external attack, or a self-inflicted DoS caused by a device on the inside. Get an access list in place to see who's hitting the service, or fire up Ye Olde Wireshark.

...or cut Comcast out and use OpenDNS instead...
