"Yo, man. My friend has been stealing wireless off of his friend for the past few months, but they firewalled that shit now!"

"OK... so he needs his own wireless router?"

"Nah, man, I need to know how he can hack that password!"

"... Well, sure! I'm sure there's a programme we could install for him! Assuming this programme doesn't have a virus or keylogger piggybacking onto it, and assuming this firewall doesn't have a shut-down for too many misses, he should have a 64 bit WEP code in about... fifteen years?"

"Oh..."

"Is that all?"

"Yo, is there an easier way?"

"..."

At this point, I decided that I'd explain to him that we can't just wave magic hacker tools; at the best case, I'd need physical access to the router in question, or a PC that accesses it. I let him know routinely that this is not something you can just *do*.

"Yo, I'm comin' over Monday, you gotta show me how to hack, dawg!"

"........."

Uh, 64-bit WEP is pretty trivial. Took me a couple hours, but I had really bad signal.

There's also ethics to worry about, and how blabby said friend is with his mouth. That may have been the other reason for the inaccurate response. :)

personally, I will *not* do anything questionable for the non-technical friends of mine- primarily because it may come back to haunt me and cost me my job.

Very trivial. Can be done in seconds. Half an hour if you include installing and setting up the tools. Assuming you have a powerful box. On a PIII it'll take a few hours.

Nah, depends how much traffic you get.
I tested my eee-701 on a friends 128bit WEP AP and after getting enough packets, it took about 2-5 minutes with the latest aircrack :P

Yeah, the long part is waiting for enough traffic. It goes really quickly once someone starts browsing YouTube though!

Ethics? Ethics? We don't need no steeeeeenkin' ethics.

I'm more concerned that you have a friend that uses the phrase "they firewalled that shit now" let alone "Yo" and "Dawg." :P

If you really wanted to stonewall him, you might'a could'a made stuff up: You have to check the framistat against the ratio of the interociter or else you could pericomboblulate the entire Yellow Network, and heaven knows we wouldn't want that, would we?

He'll need a new flux capacitor. Shouldn't be too hard to find in one of the local stores.

Just make sure you get an Acme FC, those Yoyodyne or Lexcorp ones aren't worth two hoots.

My response would have been: "You steal shit, you fix it yourself."

You get the best wireless speed by hacking the site fbi.gov...

Tell him you can only crack WEP keys with a Theremin.

1. If he has a Theremin, you get to play with it for awhile.
2. You get to shift the conversation to talking about a Theremin instead of hacks that a first year undergrad in math could solve.
