Oh Joy....

Summary -- "__internalwebapp__ is not working"

Description -- "uninstalled IE8 and now PC is not responsive"

Um... Doc, my finger hurts. Can you sew my arm back on when you're done looking at it?

Um, if you have internal web apps, what the hell are users doing installing software on their computers? Lock that shit down.

Yeah, but if you have enough IT to have internal web apps, you should have enough IT to lock down the users' systems. Particularly when certain updates have the potential to break your apps. IE8 is marked as critical on Windows Update, and on August 25th it's going out to WSUS with auto-approval as well.

Some software doesn't like to be locked down.

We have a ton of web apps.

We also run Autocad which throws a complete hissy fit it the user is anything below adminsitrator (power user, normal user)

We have a few apps like that so it's Local Admin only.

Tums is my friend. That and a full reimage on a boot USB.

Oy. That's going to be fun; we still have a few internal apps that run IE6 only. And as the cost of upgrading is, well... very expensive / time consuming / not pretty, we're stuck supporting IE6 for the duration.

I've lost track of the number of times my dickweed end users have managed to get Firefox installed on their computers because they were so sick of IE6 's little quirks.

It's great when I get halfway through diagnosing an application fault only to have to stop, remove Firefox off their machine and go back to fixing the error.

(I hate supporting IE6..bloody thing is a mess)

I'm presuming there's no way you can just...use and support FF, given that neither IT *or* the users seems to like it? Not like it's going to cost any money, after all. :-/

Actually, what worries me more there is how badly broken a system has to be that simply having another browser installed breaks it. I could see just needing to change the default browser, but having to remove FF to make IE behave? That's nuts.

Indeed.

We have a bunch of web apps at my place (and adding more all the time).

Company standard is IE6. Fortunately, all of our apps play nicely with Firefox, *provided* you leave IE as the default browser.

HP printer software is famous for this.

Plotter software isn't much better.

They embed HTML and javascript everywhere. If Firefox is default it thows up hissy fits. Also if you upgrade to a new version of IE before updating the driver software it can throw hissy fits... I guess it just likes to throw hissy fits.

Welcome to our system.

We have a total of over 1,800 different applications, some of which are browser based and require hand-holding to work in IE6. They won't even work with any other browser.

The amount of approval commitees we have to go through to get even a standalone desktop app added to the list is legendary, anything else requires more red tape than even I am willing to deal with.

(Large public-funded company...oy)
