There's a beautiful thread over on Something Awful where they illustrate captchas.

Oh, that's my favorite thread since the LF cartoons thread, and with much less senseless rage!

I'm still a fan of this CAPTCHA I received once. (See icon.)

I don't have a screenshot, but recently got a CAPTCHA that required using an ASCII escape code (or I guess the Character Map) to complete. It was throwing symbols like © and ½.

I refreshed it and got symbols like that 3 out of 5 times. I was highly amused.

Looks like ReCAPTCHA to me -- they put up stuff from books that OCR couldn't recognise.

So they probably had some maths books in there or something?

Generally speaking, with something like this - it's a REcaptcha - the way it works is:

There are two parts separated by a space. One of the words is one they know the value of already; in this case, I'm guessing it's 'Enoch'. This is the word you have to get correctly to pass the Turing test. The other one is from an OCRed book that ReCaptcha doesn't understand. You put in what you think it says, and then it compares that to the input of a number of other people who also attempted to figure it out, and then once there is a consensus it accepts that a particular spelling is correct.

There was a thread on reddit once of someone who enjoyed messing with the captcha by figuring out which word it was trying to understand and putting something offensive.

...So in those cases where there are crazy symbols, I usually just put in something random alongside the correct word.

I have a screenshot on my laptop somewhere of what I think is the best captcha ever: 'CUNTO'.

It's like they knew we were in Scotland.
