I inherited with my job a Firebox X Edge running Watchguard.......

What kind of idiots make a firewall/router combo that you CAN'T TURN THE FIREWALL OFF ON???? Seriously, you can't do it,

Remind me to take great pleasure at ripping Firebox out sometime and replacing it with a SonicWall or something else that isn't has dain bramaged.

Isn't the SonicWall neutered as well as brain damaged?

I think something by Linksys/Cisco might be a better option. At least with the Linksys, if the built in firmware pisses you off, you can try one of the alternatives(openWRT, DD-WRT, etc)

Help me understand. My shop sells Cisco ASA's or ISR's and Checkpoint devices/product on SPLAT. Which, by default, nail up some pretty effective firewalling. Why would I want to turn off the firewall on my firewall. I'm honestly curious and mean no snarkiness.

My guess is that as this is a router/firewall combo, turning off the firewall temporarily might be handy to diagnose a problem. Alternately, turning it off permanently might be handy if you only want the routing functions and want to install a new (and better) firewall in conjunction.

That's the only reasons I could see anyway.

Not to mention the fact that the previous IT director set it up as the DHCP server, and I wanted to turn the firewall off to make it easier to troubleshoot.
