Rachel Lucas is a popular blogger who moved to the UK about a month ago and has been in BT hell ever since. She posted a good rant about it at http://www.rachellucas.com/index.php/2009/03/26/dirty-evil-robbing-bastards/

Tim Minear, executive producer and writer on ‘Firefly’, ‘Angel’ and ‘Wonderfalls’ reads her blog.

Who is this woman and why is she relevant?

Seconded - even if it was a relevant rant, which I don't think it is, the stuff about Tim Minear is just pointless and stinks of an attempt at promotion.

If this was a BT DSL connection, why didnt she just go and buy a Netcomm or Billion or something modem from a shop, 2 days afer the first one broke?

While I can sympathise with her dealings with BT (Telstra here are the same) and I can grok why she probably doesnt understand the diff bwtn phone and DSL techs, I tire of ranty people who sit on their hands for weeks before calling back and screaming WHY ARENT YOU DOING ANYTHING.

Call the next day. do some research. Learn the reasons why DSL can fail - and not just from the ISPs crappy setup sheet

Sorry.... I deal with this every day and have long ago lost sympathy for this kind of "wahhhh do it all for me what do I pay you for!?" person.

I think BT might actually require you to use their equipment. It certainly wouldn't surprise me. Still, she could easily find a much better provider. There are plenty of good ones here in the UK.

Hm with cable I could understand that but I cant see how it'dbe the case with DSL unless they hardcode some really arcane settings in that they wont tell customers about. Which would not at all suprise me.

BT provide shitty rebranded 2Wire routers, that honestly are pieces of shite. I suffered dealing with quite a few of them when I was living in the UK.

Though, we'd switch them out and replace them with a Netcomm. Worked fine.

Yeah thankfully the ISP I work for supplies Netcomms. They have their own foibles but they work ok.

Yeah, they were our fix all to the BT pieces of crap. Pretty solid for the most part.

Using BT for the internet was the first mistake. MANY other providers can provide service over a BT line, and almost all are more competent than BT.

Personally I use Demon Internet, and I've heard good things about IDnet and Zen too.

I also use Demon and they've always been wonderful.

If you look hard enough you can find horror stories about anyone and anything so it's really her own fault.

Shouldn't do - despite all their 'HomeHub' nonsense, they're not allowed to sell a product that's different from every other DSL provider. Any ADSL modem will work. The settings are the same for every ISP in the country - all you need to do is feed in your authentication details.

at the very least, the first entry provides a Devil's Advocate stance regarding what we encounter on the other end of the call, but this group probably doesn't want to hear it.

Tim Minear/Firefly awesomeness aside, the second entry could be construed as blogspam.

Honestly, I'd suggest to be at the ready for deletion...
