Dear Asshat,

Just wanted you to know - you're not special. At least, not in the way you think. You're special in that Forrest Gump kinda way - with less common sense and more angst.

When I say the update is MANDATORY, that means you don't get a vote. When you bitch about it anyway, and demand that I ASK PERMISSION to access your machine, I simply go to my boss, who laughs and then calls YOUR boss. When you "lock" your machine to "keep" me from accessing it after your boss gave the all-clear, I laugh at your cluelesness, unlock the machine (after getting screenshot of your asshattery in all its corpulent glory), do my job, and leave you to deal with the aftermath of what I hope to $Diety becomes a career-limiting event. The staff are all pretty much sick of you, and your boss isn't going to want to walk around the outside of the building to avoid us every time you fuck up.

You're no different from anyone else here, but if you keep this up, you just might be. Just thought you ought to know.

Wishing for you a F.O.A.D.,

me

Pfft. You were too nice. Couldn't you have remoted in and forced him to watch you do the update?

It's extra-nice to be able to not only remote in anyway, but lock them out while the update is performed. Although generally, this only happens if they've delayed getting the update over and over, and you therefore have a mandate handed down from the executive level which says that the update is more important than ANYTHING that particular user could possibly be working on at that time.

"CIO says you're my bitch and it's your own fault, suck it up!"

My SOP when doing this stuff is a) I attempt to remote into the machine. if it's in use, I call the offending user. if they ain't there, I wait 20 minutes, and then give them what I lovingly refer to as "DER BOOT", regardless of if they had anything open or unsaved.

My boss is much the same way, absent my merciful nature and sense of fair play- he'd never wait the 20 minutes. :D

I love it when business users think the machines are 'their computers'.

careful now, you know how much fun it isn't when people come and fool with "your" phone, chair, desk, etc.

We make sure to use the term "workstation" instead of computer when dealing with our users. Helps reinforce the point.

I'm a Mac admin, and delightfully, Apple's remote desktop app allows me to show the user a message when I take control and lock their screen. For users like this, it's "Mandatory means you too."

There are two types of users that fight updates like this; those with an exagerated sense of their own self importance and those that have something to hide...

All users have something to hide but those who "protest" have more. Ten years ago, when I was still doing primary user support, it was the people who would not accept updates, who were looking at porn, had Monster.com as their home page, or were transferring client files to their home PC with illegal FTP programs.

More like illicit, ftp programs that should not have been on company machines, used to transfer files that should not have been transferred.
