I work in a public benevolent research institute. Probably one of the better funded ones in this country too. Even so, seeing researchers scrimp and save so they can afford to buy a new computer is not out of the ordinary.
To see then, what arrived in the mail today shocked us a little. A 20" LCD iMac and it is going to be used primarily for... (wait for it)
Filemaker.
Nothing that would actually use the qualities of this screen, like publishing, web page editing, or even 10+ xterms. Nothing that will even push the CPU. To see this computer do some data analysis would be nice.
It is destined for a head of division's wife. Not someone who actually brings research money in.

I can see some lab people who are going to be distinctly pissed.

It does play movies really nicely. I might see if I can keep it for some more 'testing'.

Fuck that.. I have a computer sitting in a storage room here that could run file maker. Just slap a G3 card in it and load OS-X on the HD!

LOL! The extra computer I have is actually one of the Power Computing CLONES. It's got the latest and greatest PowerPC 604e w/ 32 MB of RAM and it includes both a 3.5" floppy AND a ZIP-100! And it's loaded with the latest release of Mac OS 8.6.
