While I generally agree with this statement, there is a benefit to waiting tables over IT: When you work head-over-heels for someone as a waiter, you at least get tips. In IT, you generally get a call two days later with some twat going "IT WAS WORKING BEFORE YOU FIDDLED WITH IT FIX IT FUCKER"
The *only* time I've gotten anything above the pittance that is called a paycheck was when I went *far* above and beyond the call of duty working on a register for a local business that had apparently stumped everyone. The owner of the place gave me a $20 and told me to not bother telling anyone when I protested that I was not allowed to accept it...
On the plus side, in IT you at least know what your salary's going to be at the end of the week, there are probably more career options, and you're slightly less likely to be barfed on.
True, very true. I've worked IT and I waited tables and did pizza delivery at university...
Waiting tables pays about the same as the Helldesk and usually the customers are politer. [but waiting tables is hell on the feet!]
Pizza delivery pays less, but you get free food [there's always someone who orders than never answers the door], and you don't have to take any aggro from the customers. [hey, everyone knows it's not wise to piss off the pizza dude.]
But if you want real money, get yourself a suit, a briefcase and go self-employed as an IT 'consultant'...
The occasional shots with the drunk college kids always helped the nights go quicker as well. Half naked hotel guests, cigars, the occasional toke, entire cheerleader/swimmer/band squads stuffed in the same elevator, playing music as loud as I want on the way back to the shop, big ballers trying to impress their whores, catching embarrassed honeymooners with an "unexpected" knock, blowing through snow drifts disguised as curbs and intersections, cash in my pocket every night, racing through the close to hit up last call at the bar..... man, sometimes I miss the ol' pizza gig
Eh... faulty logic. People who wait tables and work retail get parents saying to their kids "See, if you don't do well in school you'll end up like her!" Meanwhile, said wage slave is working that job so that she can continue going to university, possibly in a tech field (it's a myth that only arts majors have to do that).
In other words, having a tech degree doesn't mean you'll never have to wait tables, and I would have thought that the poor dumped-on tech slaves would have more sympathy for the wait slaves (instead of dumping on them ourselves).
