Password Crack Help

Ok you guys, we are trying to bust someone here at work and prove he wrote a certain script. He has password protected some documents and I am trying to get in them. I tried downloading Brutus - a password crack off the internet but it had a trojan attached in it. So now I am not wanting to really download something unless it is getting a thumbs up from you guys.

Do you know of any password cracks I can use that are free? Or do you know where I should look to find the password within this document or others?

This one specifically is a word doc. But this little buggar has had zip files locked as well

ah bloody hell

password protection on word docs is nothing... just open the file in a hex editor or in Notepad or something. :P there should be a blob of text in there that's pretty much what the document contains.

furthermore, this really isn't the best place to look for that kind of thing. hit up Google or something.

finally, if it's at work, tell the guy's supervisor that you're concerned... unless you're the boss, in which case, I'm really not surprised either. :p

Well the person in question deleted the file but I saved it to my share. I looked at google but the cracks I found only go 5 letters into it unless you pay for the app which I am not about to do. I did open it in notepad and it had a string of registry keys but after doing a search with the key I can't find anything either.

Hmm, I did email it off to our security guy since he asked. So ... there we are.

Correction: password protection on Word docs *used* to be nothing... now M$ encrypt the files and from what I've heard you need a brute-forcer. Same goes for zip files - there's a pretty good free zip cracker around.

No nothing is quite as satisfying as posting anonymously. Coward.

If you knew said coworker you would understand. He made the sweetest girl in the office cry not once but twice and was telling the customer that she is stupid and didn't know anything. This girl is so good she should be in QA. I don't know about you, but yeah I get personal satisfaction helping this person leave. We are to be on the same team and when you treat team memebers like that, steal others ideas and take credit for them that just makes them an ass. Plus I could easily say 200 out of the 245 don't like him.

I got him fired. Screen shots and his own stupidity did it. Plus you can't act like a god type when you are not, let alone making perfectly nice people cry. He was a menace and I am not sorry I did it. Hell I'd do it again.
