I work for $FinancialCo., doing tech support. This guy calls in, saying he can't connect to the wireless network at home using his work laptop. So I do a bunch of troubleshooting, make sure that the wireless device is installed and functional. Make sure his wireless card was switched on...which it was. So I said "Hmmm...are you able to connect to the wireless on anything else in the house?" to which he said "no, I'm not at home right now, I'm at the office. Should I be at home?" Ugh. If you call in about a connectivity problem AT HOME, wouldn't it be obvious that you need to be AT HOME? 14 minutes wasted!!

I'm only half into my day, and these are the calls I've been recieving ALL DAY. So help me god, I better be able to settle in at home with a bottle of whiskey and Gears of War 2 or I'll be very very grumpy.

Was this the standard lack of understanding about the differences in range between WAPs and, for example, satellite TV?

I've had a guy call about his laptop not connecting to the site-wide wireless network, and had to explain to him that the range of the transmitters was maybe a couple of hundred feet tops, and that he might have some problems attempting to connect from over a thousand miles away.

Note to self: have corporate laptop "connect to wireless" interfaces pop up something like "Scanning for wireless points up to 50 feet away... no networks found within 50 feet" - not technically accurate, but getting the point across.

I had a guy once that called in for help with his home cable modem connection once.

From his cell phone.

In his car.

On the highway.

with the top down.

And he was surprised when I suggested he call us back from home.

He was also obviously annoyed I was having trouble understanding a fucking thing he said.
