You know, I really love arguing network topography with misconceived n00bs.

I mean, I've only been working in the field for a decade or so, and went to uni for this shit, I'm happy to be put in my place by someone who thinks it's "a series of tubes"

(That aside, anyone else getting screwy intermittent "Host not found" errors from yahoo and comcasts mail servers?)

Then again, I love being told by someone who's "been in the industry for thirty years" that his "network cable unplugged" error re his router and self-purchased modem is the ISP's fault for having a downed line in the neighbourhood.

could be, problem is I'm not going through the entire damned mail cluster and banging away at yahoo's primary IP until I find all the unresponsive mail servers, and then tracerouting them all to find the fault.

They're just driving me nuts - three of our 32 mail servers are going "naaaaaaaaaaaw, yahoo's not there" and only doing so intermittently - eg I can bang away at them a couple dozen times and only get three dodgy route replies, but no, it's the END OF THE WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORLD because they can't get their forwards from their pop3 domain accounts.

Considering Yahoo is the dodgiest fucking email server on the face of the planet, I say fuck 'em.

Ahh the same logic that thinks "Who needs more than 3gb on broadband! It's just email and shit!" and "Of course we can rape the shit out of competitors for DSL. That's what they're there for!"

I used to work for the fuckers in DSL provisioning....and since my NDA was never filed, let me tell you - all those tinhat conspiracy theories? True. We were actually ordered to fail X amount of competitor DSL checks and then offer it to the customers instead.

Yeah totally - no one needs to run updates on their pc's, or anything like that. 3gb is TONS AND TONS.

My brother worked in billing for a month - told me about their cancellation tickbox which was.... crap, i forget the wording.... deceptive selling practices? Something like that which is basically "someone lied to sell our shitass services to you". I'm sad that that sort of shit is real. Not even remotely surprised, just sad.
