verbatim question from customer :
"I just want to know how to charge my mp3 player. I mean when I plug it into the computer, it begins charging....but how do I charge it?"

I realize at first this seems silly, but he may mean how can he charge it WITHOUT plugging it into the computer. I was in a similar position where I wanted to charge my iPod but didn't want to use the computer to do it (especially since iTunes would hijack my computer each time). Not everyone realizes that you can go buy third party wall outlet to USB chargers.

I didn't even realize winamp still existed! It has been so long since I last used it...

Its incredibly awesome. You can load all the plugins you want! I have mine set up to do autocrossfading at -6db, volume compression (normalization) on the fly, ability to play mp3g (karaoke files), and I use it to DJ at the bar.

Stick with the older versions, much MUCH less bloat and much more useful.

I love WinAmp; it can be used to add songs to an iPod? The reason it kicks ass over iTunes is how wonderfully inobtrusive it is. Although I gotta say I love the new Genius feature in iTunes. /advertisement

Not just ipods... almost any other removable storage device can be maintained through winamp.

But, if you have an ipod and want to use winamp, it does have built in support for ipod, but I reccomend adding the mlipod plugin (http://mlipod.sourceforge.net/) which has way more features.

I was using Winamp but the latest version doesn't like my ipod for some reason.

Anyone know any good iTunes alternatives for OSX? I'm okay with iTunes as it is, but if there's anything better, I'd gladly migrate.

This thread is encouraging. At times, I have thought I was the last anti-iTunes holdout. I find it horribly obtrusive. I've installed it a few times when people heralded its newest features, and always uninstalled it soon after in absolute disgust.

Winamp for me, too, plzkthx.

I just download tunes using Amazon downloader - that way I'm legal and I can put the songs where I want ... on my phone!

Who uses the apple firmware anymore? I use rockbox, and then it's just a USB mass storage device...

You can set iTunes to not start up when you plug in an iPod.

At least, I think you can.

Or, you could just uninstall it ;)

Heh. I still like some of its features. I find it's better for keeping sixty thousand tracks organized, and I can play by genre or what have you (although I'm sure WinAmp has a similar feature 'cuz it is awesome), and that Genius feature just kicks all kinds of ass.

I have 90,000 mp3s. Winamp does just fine :D

But you're right, if you're not very interested in handcrafting playlists by hand, Genius does kick ass. I'm still not willing to let my machine become an itunes slave for just that though. :D
