[identity profile] salavora.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery
Hi there,
[livejournal.com profile] talshoe 's post just reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend of mine lately.
Up to that day I thought he was a least a bit computer literate (he new what a desktop is and how to use folders)... well live and learn and get used to disapointment
(btw: -_- = *headdesk*)

He: OH MY GOD! MY PROGRAM DISAPEARD!!!
I: Disapeard?
He: Yes!!!! It's totaly gone!!  It is really really important! Can't you do anything???
I: Uhm, its your corporate laptop, maybee you should go to their IT dep. and ask them to reinstal it?
He: I can't! You see, my son made my laptop boot faster over the weekend, and I am afraid he accidently deleted the program or something..  But I can't tell thet our ITs!
I He tweeked your CORPORTE laptop? The one you signed an agreement for, not to fool around with?"
He: yes
I : -_- I see... ok, what exactly happens, when you click on the icon?
He : Thats the problem!! the icon isn't there anymore!
I : oook, but all the other icons on your desktop are still there?
He: Shure... uhm.. I don't know if that`s important, but the icon I use to start the program is not on the desktop.
I: *starting to get a bis suspicious* Hm, where exactly is the icon normaly?
He: Down there with the others.
I: Down WHERE exaclty? you mean by the clock?
He: Clock? there is a clock on my pc?
I: The thing in the lower right corner... that tells the time.. it's called "clock"
He: Oh.. that... uhm, yeah, next to it normaly.
I: -_- click on start and then on programs, is your programm there?
He: No.....
I: Go through the folders, is the programm in there somewhere?
He: Uhm, let me see, Uhm, I only have to hover over the folder for it to open right?
I: Yes
He: *starts to list all the things he sees in the folder* Accessability, Comunication ..
I: You are in the Accessoirs folder, right?
He: How do you know???
I: -_- ... psychic I guess... look.. do you know the company that developed the program?
He: Yes Company X
I: is there a folder named X?
He: Yes
I: *wait* ... ok, is the program in there?
He: Oh! Let me see.. (Me: -_-) oh here is a thing that has the same name as my program, but the icon is different!
I: click on it anyway.
He: heh! the program is back!!!
I: Congratulations! How about I come over for dinner with your family and make shure, your program will be back the next time you boot, too?
He: Shure, that would be great!
I: Uhm, your son is there, too?
He. Yeah.. why?
I: I just want to talk to him a bit.... * searches for biiiig hammer*

Apperently, the son kicked everything out of autostart and startup he didn't know. The most important program his father used, too...

Edith says: I have to get used to those LJ-Cuts

sadly...

It happens so often with corporate laptops that refreshing the HD image is (or should be) a standard procedure. And given that the son had been screwing with all kinds of things, a single half-hour reinstall is preferred to twenty tickets over the next six months which all deal with subtle weirdnesses caused by the kid's tampering.

"Take the laptop in for a reghost, NEXT!"

So if son is savvy enough to fuck with it, WHY did daddy not ask him???

With that whole "You have unused icons on your desktop" doohickey, you don't even need help from your son...

we had one "user" who thought he knew more about installing Notes than the IT staff did.

without FAIL, every Friday, at 4p, he'd coming with his laptop, insisting that the laptop specialist drop everything right that second to fix it because he had IMPORTANT meetings and business he had to do over the weekend.

he kept installing extra phone dialers and totally f*cking up his settings. But not every single time.

the major problem? the laptop specialist was in the vanpool and *had* to leave by 4:30 and couldn't if the laptop wasn't back in working order.

I had to drive her home twice when she was forced to miss the van due to this VP's modifying his laptop.

we brought this to our supervisor's attention who kicked up HIS chain and back down the VP's chain who was told in no uncertain terms that if he messes up his laptop again, too damm bad. He'd have to miss his all so important meetings or have to come into the office to do his job.

he never brought the laptop back in for repair. *shrugs*
