Had a client call in, weve done work for him in the past. I knew he was far from the brightest bulb in the box but today he asked if we could help him remove a tracking device from what he called a "hot" laptop.

No.

Really sir, Like I want to risk an entire business with a 15 year reputation to make at best $100 for helping you steal stuff, where do I sign up?

Heh ... I got the same kind of call from a relative recently (since I apparenntly provide unlimited free tech support for family members ... I don't recall actually volunteering for that, but that seems to be how it works out...). He told me that he had the opportunity to purchase a cheap laptop that "fell off the back of a truck", and wanted to know how he could tell if it had something like Lojack for Laptops installed, and if so, how it could be removed...

I patiently explained to him that saving a relatively small amount of money by buying a laptop that's most likely stolen, and on which he'd never be able to get manufacturer technical support or hardware repair on, was a dumb idea. And miracle of miracles, he actually listened to me, and bought a new laptop direct from Dell instead... (I wouldn't so much mind being the family's "free unlimited tech support dweeb", if they'd actually pay attention to what I tell them when they ask me something - usually, if the answer isn't what they want to hear, they don't....)

what was the address again? I'll send someone right out there; they'll be driving our company car, which incidentally is black and white and has pretty blue and red lights on top. You say that sounds like a police car? Funny that - you're not the first customer who's made that comment; we've been thinking of changing our company cars, but we can't afford it because we've had a lot of thefts lately.

You should have taken it, called the cops, and returned the laptop back to its rightful owner.
