I work for a network storage company. We sell really high end mega-big huge storage systems to companies that eat terabyte drives like popcorn. Our cheapest system costs more than I make in a year...

Just got off the phone with a "sysadmin" from an international communications company. They're planning on upgrading the system's OS to something that's current, which is YAY

The problem is that... she was clueless. Totally and completely. She was told by our sales engineer to download the latest OS installer. She doesn't know what an OS is. She doesn't know what FTP is. She can't log into the REALLY simple Web front-end of our boxen.

I told her to go fetch the OS installer from our ftp site, she says "OK, do I open Internet Explorer? I mapped a drive!"

She's a SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR. She makes more than I do, probably considerably more.

How do I get her job?

No in order for the original poster to get the system administrators position the lobotomy would be helpful. Additionally some elective surgery such as breast augmentation may be halpful, as well as the ever popular short skirt and kneepads combination.

The type of people that come in/mail resumes for our sysadmin job postings always make me chuckle. Most of the conversations go something like "I can use excel to track who has what IP. DHCP? No, never heard of it" or "Linux, isn't that the company that makes air conditioners?"

I'm a systems/storage person as well. I feel your pain. Heck, I want to kill her as well. People like that drag the industry down. I wish that they'd drag the average salary up though. It's sad that the more clueful you are, the more likely you are going to get screwed over in salary.
