It is just never a good sign, when taking over a site from another outsourced IT company, to find not one, not two, but THREE different Undelete / data recovery utilities on their primary file server.   **sigh**

They had that...but sadly, were using it on a volume that was too full. While leaving a scratch volume of 3/4 that size untouched.

...with pulling the single unmirrored hard drive out of their main server and throwing it as far as I can into the heart of Camberville, thus probably hitting at least five hybrid cars and violating a dozen local ordinances against the disposal of computer parts?

Heh. I know the scenario all too well. Next Monday I pull a sixty user law firm off of an NT 4 domain. One of our "competitors" had been "supporting" them for years and did not take kindly to the client ditching them for my company. Must be why the IDE RAID card that they sent to replace the failed controller in their desktop-quality greybox PDC was only compatible with w2k and beyond.

Yeah, my site is above 'IDE RAID card' (shudder) status, but worse in some ways - they have a spiffy 1.6 TB Dell MD1000 RAID array on the file server...being backed up to a 1TB Western Digital Firewire drive.

Just goes to show you can throw tech at a problem, but without a process behind it...
