For those of you that do online (chat) based tech support... how big of an annoyance is it to you when the person repeats their chats? I don't mean asking the same question 6 different ways (but don't get me started on that...), I mean copy+paste of the same thing. As in, 3 or more would be chat-bombing. To me. Just because I didn't respond within OMGZ0RZFIVESECONDS!!!!!one1one doesn't mean I'm not there. And I type 100+ wpm - I hate to think of what some of the other agents get. ;(

I think it's incredibly rude and I tend to react badly to it - as my upcoming "coaching" appears to demonstrate ;( but I'm wondering if I'm just neurotic and bitchy or whether this is a common complaint.

This whole friggin DAY needs a do-over.

I hate that with a passion, and I usually head it off with "please give me a moment to check something" or "let me see if I understand" and then repeating it back to them, slightly reworded. Most people stop at that point because they see that I *am* actually looking at the chat and doing something in the background.

Why would they continue to bomb you though? If you're away from the keyboard, it's not like you'll be able to see what they're trying to say any better if they say it eight times.

Lusers are such assholes.

Because it's their equivalent of shouting for attention, and because over the Internet no-one can smack them wih a rolled-up newspaper until they break the childish habit.

My sister in law does online chat for a rather large gem/beading supply distributor. I think I'd rather snack on the business end of a large caliber firearm before dealing with idiots via chat. Apparently, people are extremely impatient like this almost all of the time -- and the reps usually have anywhere from 3 to 6 chats open all day, while researching info in the background. I guess people are assholes on online support chat regardless of the topic.

Fortunately, we don't do this for our customers (we're a wholesale ISP services company) -- yet. However, a couple of years ago one of our web monkeys thought it would be a splendid idea to post my personal IM info on our website's support info page, unbeknown to me. Imagine my surprise when I started getting messages, while on vacation, from random people (they never ID themselves or their company), asking for things like mail server hosts or why we don't support MS Exchange. Just what I want to deal with when I'm out of the office on my own time, especially considering I'm in freaking network operations, not support! Shame I was 1200 miles away from the office, because I probably would have throttled the idiot. I think he got the clue when I changed the offending webpage and set the file immutable. :)

There are still a few who have my info, but I never see them online. I do occasionally get offline messages asking if I'm there...

Please don't do that.

The addition of the full stop in a chat scenario seems to give people pause. I love it :D And they can't bitch because you were so polite...

I had one dickhead who seemed to think I was somewhat of a shrinking flower he could be a complete sleaze to. Boy was he in for a surprise...

I hate that so much.

The online course management software my university uses has a chat function. I hate it. I'll be chugging along on my own course work and someone from one of the courses I TA will message me. Of course, the way my school has it set up, I can't see WHAT course they're connected to me through.

Then, most of the time, they'll spontaneously spew a chunk of code at me and ask what is wrong with it. This chat tool prevents selection of text in the chat window and strips all formatting, so their code is often hard to read, but god forbid I not know INSTANTLY what's gong on. Worse, every time they nag me, the chat window jumps to the bottom!

If I ever meet the idiot who created GetFocus (and thus spawned GrabFocus and all its demonic little shit-demon offspring) I am going to fucking kill them.

Just set your window manager to ignore focus hinting.
