Finally!

The last NetWare 4.11 server I had to support has been retired - not a day too soon, if I say so myself. Replaced by a shiny new Dell PE SC440 running Windows Server 2003 R2. 100% Windows now, with exception of 4 big ESX boxes - running Windows VMs anyway. No more mucking around with pcAnywhere over analog modem into a Win98 box to run rconsole to make some trivial adjustment...

Yep- Instead you get to RDP into the damn things, unless some bastards have left themselves logged in and just killed the connection instead of logging out, then throws a bitch fit when you reset their connection to free up an RDP session to check/do something on the server because they were running stuff that's critical to the application that's running on that server on that connection instead of of the console session, of calling the support desk and having one of the monkeys walk over to the console and act as remote hands for you.

Fricken 2 session limit...

Oh, I know- But we frequently have crap that runs on the console itself. Fortunately, it's only one venduh that pulls that crap. Unfortunately, it's on a server that I frequently have to remote into to do stuff.

It's not RDP that breaks something, it's the fact that the venduh does not know enough to log out instead of just closing the RDP session. And they frequently leave a moitoring program running, which leaves me uncertain wither or not to kill off the session for fear of breaking some process they've got running. It's somewhat creaky software.

Some of our Systems analysts do it too, which really gets on my tits, because they know better.

You are sooo lucky. Savor the day.

I await the day I can retire my oldest Novell server... running 3.12
I'd also like to be rid of the AS/400 and the Sunsoft Interactive UNIX from about 1994.

The IRIX doesn't bother me.
