Gah I am so glad I only have to talk to these people over the phone rather than being the one to go on site.
Just found this note from one of our technicians that went out to repair a computer:
"Please do not accept any calls for this address. This apartment is unhealthy and unsanitary. It is infested with roaches on a scale that is almost biblical. I will not accept any other calls to that location and I can't imagine anyone else going there. The true cause of the computer failure was the massive amount of roaches living and dying inside all parts of the computer case. I can not adequately describe how bad it was only to say that I did not even want to leave my bag on the floor, except there was no place clear put it on the floor."

Eww... that's a high ick factor. My ex used to fix TVs and VCRs - he'd bring them home sometimes and work on them in the basement. Sometimes he'd take the back off a set and a whole host of critters would come pouring out. I put my foot down and said "No more!"

Yuck.

I had that happen with a Sega Genesis once. A half dozen beetles screamed out of it when I flipped it over to take out the screws, and then discovered that the problem was a dead beetle that had gotten stuck and shorted the power.

Grozz.

"THERE ARE F***ING COCKROACHES COMING OUT OF THE CABLE BOX!!!" - Actual call I took.

Appears that the Warehouse where the boxes were being stored at had an infestation, eggs were laid, and, when the box warmed up...

gnyargh, Nasty.

I am tangentially reminded of the fire-ant laptop infestation stories

they're not fireants, they're crazy rasberry ants, and they EAT fire ants.

Unless there's fire ant stories I'm not aware of. These are the things that go for the electronics though. Freaky bugs

I took a call at an apartment once. Got to the door, everything appeared normal. I stepped inside and there were MOUNDS of trash EVERYWHERE. I hurriedly looked at the problem, told them it was a power supply issue and that I didn't have any extras and they had to fix it themselves. Billed them $109 plus tax and hauled ass after 15 minutes. It made me feel disgusting to be in that place. *shudders just thinking about it*

Used to get this when I worked HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning). We had a public housing unit under contract. And we'd have to go out there to every unit 2/year for maintainance. You know, check they system, change filters, etc.

There was one unit, they were all inside units, that we opened up, and roaches came pouring out. There was thousands of them in there. And in the compressor, we found the reason it wasn't working. It had 5 bullet holes in it. Then we saw the other holes in the unit, all coming from the outside.

After that, we walked outside, and right into a drive-by. Yes, a drive-by. That was when I went into my truck, got my pistol, and refused to go anywhere else.

My boss got all mad at me. He started screaming at me about how he was going to fire me for having a gun while I was working. Until he saw the bullet holes in the truck. That shut him right up.

I quit two weeks later when he asked me to go back there. I told him where to shove the place.
