Thought everyone would get a kick out of this.  Apparently Best Buy will now sell Ubuntu for $19.99 and the Geek Squad will install if for $129.99.

I thought this would give everyone a chuckle.

That is epic lulz. That's right i'm gonna pay for an OS that's free then give $130 away that I could easily spend on other great things. Good work Best Buy.

Would you do this if you were Best Buy and didn't have to be at all accountable for it? I'd have to think long and hard. A fool and his money, after all.

Do we know if that $130 is any different from what geek squad charges to install windows?

My 5 year old installed Ubuntu on his laptop the other day.

/yes, my 5 year old has a laptop. Don't worry, it's a Pentium 3.
//I had to help him with some words and partitioning choices.
///he did the rest.

Does that mean that they'll fix absolutely all hardware issues? 'Cause if so, there's times I woulda paid $130 to make my problems go away ;)

I'm talkin' more about device driver issues - i.e., "I have this video card, and x doesn't like it, but it's allegedly supported...make it work kthxbai!"

If I had some cash to burn and nothing better to do I'd build an anti-linux pc and bring it to them for amusement.

aren't there legal issues involved with that? I wonder what the creators of Ubuntu have to say.

The idea is there, but GPL is not the only license governing the software included in Ubuntu. But all the software on the media has a license that allow this in a similar way.

A)Wtf
and
B) Who is ValuSoft and what do they have to do with Ubuntu? Shouldn't the "publisher" information be "Canonical"?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ValuSoft redirects to the THQ entry.

THQ makes some of the worst video game in history (I've never bought any of their games personally, but their stuff does get managed to be given to me by well meaning relatives).

Apparently, according to www.valusoft.com, they're THQ's PC software arm. I've seen some of their stuff randomly in Best Buy, Office Max, Office Depot, etc...

Their $20 Office Suite set is nothing more than OpenOffice.org on a CD. Does anyone ever buy this kind of stuff?

Does anyone ever buy this kind of stuff?

Yes.

My company distributed some of our software through them. It was a nightmare.

Valusoft is a software publisher. my company has had dealings with them and generally they are an acceptable lot although their end users are a buncha morons. Basically, you know that rack with the $10 or $5 software? That's Valusoft.

Basically, they make agreements with shareware vendors to sell their apps, and generally they do stupid things like shove a 10mb application on a full CD-ROM. Wasteful, but idiots still buy the junk.

I'd sooner give the Geek Squad 130$ to stay away from my computer in perpetuity.

I don't see what the problem is, beside the fact that Amazon has the DVD for cheaper.
