I was promoted off the help desk several months ago (just in time to see all but one member of that help desk laid off about three weeks ago, I might add). Part of my new job responsibilities that I share with a coworker involve new user accounts and terminations.

When creating a new AD account, the standard format is the common first initial last name style. There are, of course, alternate formats; however, if the default's not in use we are supposed to give it to them.

I was just sent a request to create an account and mailbox for a Shannon Lavery.

I think I'll be deviating from the norm on that one...

Hee. One of my uncles worked for a company that used first-name-last-initial, and ended up with the username martini.

Reminds me of that Dilbert strip - "But my name is Brenda Utthead!"

Hehe. We did first five of last name and first letter of first name. So like MartiK. Every once in awhile we'd get one like that and have to change it up. I can't remember any offhand cuz it's been so long now but yeah...usernames can be amusing sometimes.

A friend of a teammate ran into that sort of problem. Though in his case, they didn't catch it until maybe three weeks later. His name? Andy* Hooker. So he was proudly and happily giving ahooker@ to everyone he knew (and some he didn't) until Security caught up with him, told him he was getting a new email address, now, and presented him with andyh@ instead.

* I can't actually remember his real first name, but I know what letter it was.

Hell no you don't! Let Shannon know exactly her position there at the company!

Heh, I created a couple of thousand accounts the beginning of last year, format first letter of first name, first three of last name, random two digit number. A few weeks later a lad came up to me saying he couldn't log on. I asked him what his username was. He went a violent shade of pink and muttered something. I asked him to repeat it. Anal92. I said it could have been worse, it could have been anal69. He saw the funny side then.

My old room mate was named Sean Murphy. :) He got "Smurphy@" for years until finally someone caught it. Then he was SeanS.

Ha! Had a co-worker with the same thing, except his first name was Scott.

Didn't help that he had brilliant blue eyes and wore blue banker shirts most of the time... ^_^

And yes, we did call him Smurphy all the time.

My husband works for a college that does the same thing. His first name starts with B, his last name is Razen.

I am greatly amused when moreso due to his personality being big and boisterous that his work email fits him with perfect clarity.

ADick got changed pretty quick for one of our clients.

On a slightly related note, the oddest scheme I have seen is the one I had in college. First three letters of the last name, first three letters of the first name, middle initial (%3s%3g%i for the exchange inclined).

Had a Tim Waters show up once upon a time. This was followed up about 5 months later by a Terry Waters. I decided to let the second one go through and see who raised an eyebrow.

Dammit, there's one more thing I'll have to think about when naming my (hypothetical) kids. It's already tough enough trying to avoid initials like KKK and combos with bad nickname potential like Richard Head!

Just remember - if your last name is a noun, never name your child an adjective. This is especially true if your last name also sounds like a part of the human body, e.g. Misty Hymen.

We've had fun this week with Paul Head too. :)

we had the 'first initial first name, first three of last name' thing for a while for one of our programs (for a while cause it doesn't give many combinations sadly).

Anyway, it resulted in "A Bra" at one point. evidentally no one cared cause it lasted until the length of the login changed.
