developer: "On server foo, please create a new filesystem /opt/bar_5, the same size as /opt/bar".

me: "/opt/bar isn't a filesystem, it's just a directory on /opt. How large do you need the new filesystem to be?"

developer: "The same size as /opt/bar".

Email is clearly not working; I need to engrave the text into the face of a hammer, and beat it into their foreheads, so they can read it in their monitor mirrors.

So make it the same size as the filesystem that contains /opt/bar.

Dear mindless_luser:

Your new filesystem has been created. /opt/bar was shown to be 4.0 Kbytes in size. /opt/bar_5 has been created identically as /opt/bar as seen below:

~$ ls -ldh /opt/bar
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K 2007-09-08 23:23 /opt/bar
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K 2008-05-06 16:06 /opt/bar_5

Glad to be of service,
BOFH

~$ sendmail -t < dumb_bastard_email ; rm dumb_bastard_email

Sorry, I have shell on the mind today. :)

I was thinking of (almost) the same thing, except I would have followed his directions and actually created a 4K filesystem mounted to /opt/bar_5. (Okay, 4K is probably smaller than the smallest filesystem you can actually create, but you get the idea.)

mkdir /opt/bar_5

It's now the exact same size as /opt/bar.

Thirded. And to anyone with /opt/bar mounted via NFS (and probably Samba, not sure, I tend to avoid it where possible) it would seem exactly like a new file system with identical size.

And even better, the size will continue to be identical for ever more!
