What are the first words out of a field-tech's mouth when they call you?
"Your equipment is defective."

Sometimes they troubleshoot and they're right, but sadly too often they don't and just say "it's not working".

It's become a joke among my coworkers and I, but it seems like half our calls start out with:

"My (software package) server is broke!"

(I never name my company on the internet. We build and ship the servers with the software on them and only our software runs on a server--it can't hold other websites, other databases, or pretty much anything but virus scanning and backup software, so f'r instance if our software was named JACKASS they'd call it the JACKASS server. )

The first question I always reflexively ask then kick myself for is
"What's it doing, then?"

The answer is ALWAYS "Nothing. That's why I called!"

*headdesk, headdesk*

It goes from there.

"So you're saying it's doing nothing wrong."
