Today, I saw a system crash because /dev/null was full.

...

I'm going to assume that the actual /dev/null device was deleted and replaced by a normal file or something.

I should ask my old comp arch prof if I can post his story of the time the zero register in the CPU wasn't zero anymore.

Multiple times, all caused by scripts written by the same person, we've had machines fill /var because she accidentally used /var/null instead of /dev/null...

I... how?

I accidentally deleted /dev/null on a SPARCStation One (what was that, about 1989 or so?) and so all the programs that piped their output to /dev/null were actually writing into the root partition. Eventually one of them filled it up.

my fault, sorry. I rounded pi to 5 significant figures the other day, which I think broke the universe. Can't have rational pi!

Seventies Porno Colin :D One of the various tosheroons produced by the eddies of fandom - in this case pics from the 70's of CB with an insanely stereotypical porno moustache.

HA! I thought I was pretty well versed in Doctor lore, but that one's new to me.

At any rate, I know, I know, I need to update my icon for the David Tennant, I'm just a huge slacker.

Might even make an alternate icon with Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant, et al as well.

Bloody hell, if you include Curse of the fatal death, you'd probably blow the 40k limit!

*much love if you set Broadbent as "Pansy" :D*

Sadly I've never been enough of a BBC afficionado to have seen Broadbent in anything else (that I remember at least). Living stateside, I've considered myself lucky to have gotten occasional Monty Python, old Doctor Who, and Black Adder. The Internet has been very useful in, er, broadening my horizons (and I swear I'll get legit copies soon, honest, but wow that stuff is expensive).

But yeah, I already hit the 40k limit pretty hard making this current icon, had to drastically reduce image quality to get it to fit.

Gahh. poor bastard. The sheer amount of beeb content is one of the advantages of still being in a 'commonwealth' country.

If you ever get a chance, snag IT crowd and Spaced. Good staples of the geek community :D

Took me a while to realize what "beeb" meant. But I did realize it :)

Depraved on account of being deprived, yessir...

You are not the first to suggest Spaced to me! Will check that out, as well as IT crowd (haven't heard of that one before).

Think I'm gonna friend ya. :P

That's, uhm, nice. What does that have to do with...anything?

:D

$5k AUD per month? Holy christ, I'll take that.

I need to dig out the page where the guy scammed the 419 scammers by pretending to be Admiral James T. Kirk, and actually got like $200 in cash FROM the scammers. That was awesome.

Sorry, thought for a moment there you were accusing my journal of containing spam. Nonsense, sure. Stream-of-consciousness crap with poor grammar and capitalization, definitely. Not spam, though.

But seriously ... 'the hell?

let me guess: someone installed Microsoft FrontPage extensions?
Used to be an old bug with their installer. (never done it myself, always stayed from it)

On solaris, at least 2.6 and 7, if you delete /dev/zero, nothing starts...
