Seen in the Neowin forums today, the worst hard drive splort I have ever seen. Check out the pics behind the cut - they're so worth it. And my question to you, O Fellow Techs, is how long did this take to happen? And how long before the luser noticed?

Evidently it's a Quantum Fireball CR 8.4 AT, out of some flavor of Dell with a PII in it. Wowch.

I saw that this morning via The Register, and my first thought was "holy crap? what the FUCK happened to sheer the platters like that?

Holy $DIETY. It almost looks like someone took a Dremel to the platters.

HOW?

Honestly... HOW? Did it get dropped into Salt Lake after getting run over by a Leopard tank?

Looks like the fire was more than figurative in the name. To get through the platters it probably took a couple weeks with the heads sitting right on them. The destruction makes me wonder if the pressure seal wasn't broken and something inserted into the drive. I have heard about drives with similar damage when a puff of metal fillings are blown into them.

I came across an old Seagate that had this same kind of meltdown. What happened is, basically, there was a severe head crash as it was running, nicking the platter. It continued to run for many days like that. The heads continued to sit in the same place, re-crashing on every rotation, until they began to grind away to powder. Amazingly, the drive kept its spindle going through all of this... Eventually, once the drive ran out of head, it began to also grind the spring-steel end of the actuator arm into dust. Finally the whole damn thing just locked up.

Seriously, how does a hard drive get that well and truly screwed? How do you not notice that your hard drive not only isn't reading, but is EATING ITSELF?!
