Other places NOT to ask for tech support...

Someone stop me from being evil. This is way too tempting. I wonder if I can actually get her to do this.

LOL

To see if she'll give you access to her desktop? ;) Depends on how honest you are, I guess. :X

Yeah, no kidding. I mean, asking for help in sf_drama is NOT really the first place I'd want to go for information on something like that.

Wanting to know what it is is one thing. Having help getting it set up? HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHA No.

lol ;)

good luck!

btw, i know i shouldn't be doing this, but this isn't the normal type of scenario. plus, i spent an hour and a half troubleshooting something exceptionally similar to this until i finally found out what it was.

1. does she have a dell?
2. does her video cable have one ferrite, or two?

after you've had your fun with her, and if you dont see anything odd on remote desktop and she swears it's there, get her to grab her monitor cable and coil it up a bit and see if that changes things.

we got a batch of dell monitors in that were exhibiting the same behavior. i spent an hour figuring out that it wasn't the monitor, it wasn't a heat issue, it wasn't a driver issue, it wasn't a refresh rate issue, it was the damn CABLE. one ferrite, and a bad one, signal interference!
i'm proud of myself for figuring that one out... the cable was LAST on the list of possible causes...

I did tech support for HP for business inkjet printers one year and yeah.. cables being bad was not usually one of the first things you'd consider. Now with printers it was something easy to check so I'd sometimes have customers try it (even if they insisted there's no way the cable is bad, 'cause sometimes changing the cable worked), but I totally understand why the cable would be overlooked. You don't think about it, so long as everything's hooked up.

Awesomely, changing the cable also restarts the device, particularly if you put it in a new USB port. :D

O.o

Fortunately, I won't have to put up with this VGA cable too much longer... next desktop's gonna have dual DVI ports. then I can cable the unix server directly to the VGA input on one of the screen, and I can kiss the damn KVM bye bye.

When I think of the "desktop image bleeding thru into black areas" I think of some kind of problem with alpha channel or transparency settings. A bad cable might cause ghosting or noise in black areas, but how would it cause an image to bleed thru that's not even being sent to the monitor in that area?

well true, but you have to take into account that we got the description of the problem from a USER. users rarely describe a problem accurately

She described it accurately - I got the same problem. And I'm pretty sure, it's a heat issue.

idk, [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama is so off-topic and random anyway, I'm not sure there's any reason not to ask. Did you see the guy who asked whether or not he should go to a therapist? Random.
