A stupid field tech

My friend is not a tech but she clearly shows the sheer stupidity of some field techs. Note she is not a tech but still fixed the job better than the dope who came out to her house.

Date: 2004-01-12 04:56 pm (UTC)In fact, I'm tempted to do it right now, 'cause it's 8 PM and the last box I have on the bench features a Creative (gag!) DVD-ROM and sounds like a hamster in a rusty wheel as it feebly attempts to read my Office 2000 disc.
Learning how to remove and reinsert a card straight and level into a PCI slot with the power on is valuable when you have 10 hours of service calls scheduled into an 8 hour day and you just can't be buggered to wait for it to shut down and boot back up.
I recommend practicing on an expendable motherboard until you get it right.
Win2k, XP, sometimes even 98/Me will handle it quite gracefully. Why else is there a "Scan for hardware changes" button in device manager?

Date: 2004-01-12 07:55 am (UTC)I asked my mom if they ever had her reseat the network cable into her NIC. She said "no." Ummmm.... shouldn't the first step in network troubleshooting always be reseating the network cable? I had her reseat it, and *knock knock*, there she was on Y! Messenger.
All that wasted time - and the price of a new cable modem - for a 10-second fix.
