"I copied all the icons from my desktop on my old computer to the desktop on the new computer; but now none of my applications work! What did I do wrong?"

Oh, OK, they WERE newly introduced in System 7. All the Macs I had used up 'til that point had been System 6 (and all had a folder on the desktop named Pubic Folder, because they were school computers and there's a certain mentality shared by all school-age boys). So that explains that.
