Wait, what?

Call of the day...

"I copied all the icons from my desktop on my old computer to the desktop on the new computer; but now none of my applications work! What did I do wrong?"

I'm ashamed to admit that I once made this mistake too, on the Apple Mac, with Aliases. Admittedly, I'd only just got a Mac of my own, so didn't really know what aliases were, but it was still pretty dumb. I was ... 13 or 14, I think.

Dude, I once nuked my entire Windows 95 drive while learning to use FDISK. We all have to learn sometime.

Ouch :) I still have a non-functional Toshiba Satellite that stands testament to the fact that deleting the C:\WINDOWS directory to clear enough space to install Windows 98 on a machine without a bootable external medium is Not a Smart Thing To Do.

That would be a fairly easy fix nowadays, with USB drive adapters to load the \win98 directory. .

When I was, oh, 10 or 11, I nuked my hard drive and to this day I couldn't tell you how the fuck I did it.

Coming to think about this, I'd been using Macs for several years previously, so I /must/ have known about aliases, unless they were newly introduced in System 7.

This has intrigued me, I must go and do some digging.

Oh, OK, they WERE newly introduced in System 7. All the Macs I had used up 'til that point had been System 6 (and all had a folder on the desktop named Pubic Folder, because they were school computers and there's a certain mentality shared by all school-age boys). So that explains that.

I remember trying to do that with a hard drive in a USB enclosure, but more from curiosity than anything.

I've had people who've been mailed shortcuts by their co-workers before and wondered why the program didn't work, and a classic once where a friend's daughter decided to tidy the HD, by putting all the .exe files into a 'exe' directory etc...
