Issue: Customer has been getting slow to no speed, and lights have begun appearing on the opposite side of the modem.

Resolution: Rotated modem 180 degrees; lights now appear on the "proper" side of the modem and customer gets full service and good speed; RF score of 12+.

Ok, Ill bite...

How did rotating the modem clear up his speed issue?

Never would have guessed that, though that's right up there with the at least once a month, "Plugged the power cord into the modem. Customer on line" ones.

I'm so sorry.

This one totally ranks with the faculty that called and asked if she downloaded and installed QuickTime "would my MP3s play faster?".

Love the icon! (I'd reword it to "add a record" though, at least for my dept.)

Well yes, but that's Banner. We had a chick with FIVE student IDs last week, that was fun to sort. When community ed students register, they go to a different ap, register for a class, and then all of those are printed out and HAND ENTERED INTO BANNER.

If you make that icon, can I have a copy? Because yes. :D Take this one if you want, I would prefer if you credited it. :D

My (full-time) job is resolving and merging dupes in Banner. The worst one we've had so far is a triple-dupe with substantial records under each ID. Ask me how fun it is when users don't use wildcards before creating a record...

I quickly knocked up my version. You're welcome to share :)

That is a thing of beauty.

Yeah, what's also fun is that the common matching sometimes won't DO matching, or pull up 231 records that have the same first three letters.

Oh, Banner.

Thanks. A year down the road, I'm slightly jaded - can you tell?

I've also noticed that common matching fails to match for reasons known only to itself. And the exact interpretation of the rules in the documentation can change every time you read it. So basically no-one really knows how it works, or why it sometimes doesn't...

(Mind if I add you?)

I just spent three months in Banner luser HELL. This is totally my fault for thinking that it'd be a good idea to see it more from the user end, but shit.

The thing that drives me the most nuts is that nothing talks to anything else. Community Ed students register online and then have to be HAND ENTERED into Banner, and then there's the tutoring accounting stuff that ALSO does not talk to Banner.

We use Banner because the state makes us, mostly, and there are somethings it's ok at? But it seems to MAKE more work than it SAVES.

We switched from a legacy system to Banner, and it's been a fairly steep learning curve. I never realized how many systems we have interfacing with each other, all running through the LDAP, which does some magical stuff somewhere that no-one seems to understand...

Yeah, Banner's one of those things that everyone uses it because everyone uses it. Kinda like Windows. We added in the JOY of also using SCT's web portal, which will do shit like forget to hand off the token to BanWeb and make people enter their userid and PIN. Which would be ok except for the part where it's not supposed to do that, and none of the student have any idea WHAT their damn PIN is, because we use the portal. It's their birth date, but 20 calls an hour on JUST THAT the first week of the term makes NO ONE happy.

Also, *friended*. Not too active until the first part of the term is up, but still. :D

The problem we had is that the username and PIN aren't meaningful to the user. They authenticate through LDAP with their university login, but if they don't go through our portal (or haven't logged in to any web apps recently) it prompts them for username and PIN... which, obviously, they don't have. So after the first few panicky people, we started telling everyone "Log into the portal first. If it still doesn't work, THEN call us."

Yeah, that's the thing. The problem we have is that they're ALREADY in portal, and it's asking for their ID and PIN again. It's usually the load balancer taking a shit but it's REALLY ANNOYING.

(I had no idea, no, none, how much work that program is for you folks until I read this comment thread. My sympathies.)

The problem with our Banner users is that none of them do. :D Or use anything else. But anyway, that's the second week of the term talking there. :D

I just started training a new hire on it today, showing her silly things like "the beginning of time" and "the end of time." We're still in the week before classes start and oh, hey, is that the system slowing down because of a zillion jobs being run?
